L Lynch Trophy raises curtain on 2021/22 NBL season

The 2021/22 English basketball season will tip-off on 15 September with the first game of the second edition of the L Lynch Trophy.

The competition, launched last season, again sees all 14 of Basketball England's NBL Division One men’s clubs, plus invited academy sides Myerscough and Charnwood.

Last season, as the basketball family battled with the constraints of the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown, clubs played behind closed doors with thousands of fans tuning in to livestreams online.

Team Solent Kestrels were crowned inaugural winners, beating Thames Valley Cavaliers in the final at the Morningside Arena in Leicester.

Essex Rebels get things under way on Wednesday, hosting London Lions II.

Teams will again compete in four regional groups of four with fans allowed back into venues. The group stages will be played over two weeks/weekends in September, giving clubs the opportunity to prepare for the NBL season - and setting up the chance of winning the first silverware of the new season.

The quarter-finals will follow in October, with semis in November and the final on 2 January.

The competition will be organised by NBL1 clubs and sanctioned by BE.

Team Solent beat Thames Valley in last year's L Lynch Trophy final

Gail Richards, Basketball England’s Senior Delivery Manager, said:

“We are really pleased to again support and work with NBL1 clubs to help them continue this event.

“Last season was challenging for all concerned but collectively we put together a competitive event leading to a great final that players, clubs and fans enjoyed.

“We look forward to the 2021/22 edition being an even bigger success with supporters back in venues across the country.”

Rob Lynch, Director L Lynch Plant Hire & Haulage, said:

"We were delighted to support last year’s excellent competition and are really looking forward to working with the NBL clubs and Basketball England as the L Lynch Trophy 2021/22 returns for another exciting instalment.

"It's great to be involved in a national competition with clubs from across the nation. We know there will be more entertainment and great basketball.

“Last season showed the L Lynch Trophy is an exciting tournament and we're excited to play a part again."
